About

The Aspirus Tick Borne Illness Center was a joint effort between a regional philanthropy - the Howard Young Foundation (HYF)- and Dr. Andy Kogelnik, former founder the Open Medicine Institute (OMI), a community-based research institute. Located in the heart of a highly endemic area for Tick-Borne Illnesses, the Center is a combined clinic and research center where every patient encounter is also a research encounter; new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are evaluated as they are utilized in a live clinical setting.

The Center has built a collaborative regional network including major health systems, public health institutions, community physicians, academic research and training programs, and regional residents and patients. The Aspirus Tick Borne Illness Center combines this regional collaborative effort with cutting edge laboratory, therapeutic, and data science. All clinical approaches are welcome and evaluated.

Now, the Center is run by Aspirus, a non- profit, community-directed healthcare system based in Wausau, Wisconsin. Aspirus has been recognized by IBM Watson Health as a Top 15 Health System for three consecutive years in its annual studies identifying the top-performing health systems in the country.

Our Partner

The Howard Young Foundation (HYF), established in 1984, is committed to advancing the health and wellness of all people in the communities they serve. The HYF is an independent non-profit 501c(3), and they select and fund projects that will have the largest positive impact and strive to bring the most up to date and innovative medical technologies to their local health care facilities – The Howard Young Medical Center in Minocqua, WI and Aspirus Eagle River Hospital in Eagle River, WI.  At the Howard Young Foundation, they have big fundraising goals. Their focus areas include building a tick-borne illness research and treatment center of excellence, supporting the growing need for resources and services related to Autism Spectrum Disorder, transforming and sustaining healthcare for generations to come through state of the art hospitals, providing end of life hospice care during patients’ final months of life, and supporting individuals and families through the Lakeland Pantry. It is through their clear vision and proven track record that they have become not only leaders in the Northwoods community, but exceptional stewards of investing generous gifts in new and innovative solutions for rural hospitals. HYF hopes that through great health care, our community continues to grow and thrive into the future.
